Ask ACI: Scented or Fragrance-Free Cleaning Products

Share

I can’t decide if I want to get a scented product or a fragrance-free one. What are the pros and cons of each?

When choosing a detergent or cleaning product, think about how the product makes you feel about your cleaning routine. Scent is an important factor—some people enjoy a pleasant fragrance, while others prefer products without any scent.

Using a cleaning product with a scent you love can make the experience more enjoyable and rewarding. Certain fragrances can transport you to a favorite place, boost your mood, or simply make your home feel more inviting.

However, some people are sensitive to scents. A fragrance-free option can remove a potential irritant without sacrificing cleaning power. It depends on your household and your needs.

What is the difference between “fragrance-free” and “unscented”?

"Fragrance-free” means the product contains no fragrance materials or masking scents. Look for certifications like the SaferChoice label, which indicates the product’s ingredients are safer for health and the environment according to the EPA. “Unscented” products don’t have added fragrance, but may use chemicals to neutralize or mask the odor of other ingredients.

What are fragrances in cleaning products?

Fragrances are combinations of various substances—natural compounds (from flowers, fruit, plants, etc.), essential oils, or synthetic ingredients—that give cleaning products their distinctive scents.

What are some common fragrances found in cleaning products and how can they affect mood?

  • Citrus: Scented with lemon, lime, orange, or grapefruit, citrus fragrances are energizing and are often associated with a clean home.
  • Rosemary: Herbal scents like rosemary are refreshing and can add a lively feel to your space.
  • Coconut: Reminiscent of beach vacations, coconut fragrances can bring a summery vibe to your home year-round.
  • Lavender: Known for its calming effects, lavender can help you relax and may even aid sleep when used on bedding.
  • Pine: Pine scents can evoke a sense of tranquility and help reduce anxiety.
  • Vanilla: Vanilla can increase feelings of joy and relaxation and help you feel satisfied and happy.
  • Peppermint: Peppermint is invigorating, helping with focus, motivation, and a positive mood.
