Ask ACI: Cleaning with Degreasers

How do I use a degreaser to clean?

First, always read and follow the label every time, including dilution, dwell time, rinsing, and personal protection instructions.

  • Use in a well-ventilated area, especially when spraying or working indoors.
  • Wear gloves and eye protection if directed, or whenever splashes are possible.
  • Never mix degreasers with bleach, ammonia, disinfectants, or other cleaning products.
  • Keep products away from children and pets during use and storage.
What is a degreaser?

A degreaser is a cleaner formulated to loosen, dissolve, or lift grease, oil, food residue, and grime from surfaces. Some degreasers are water-based, while others may contain solvents for tougher jobs. Because formulas vary, the safest and most effective way to use any degreaser is to follow the directions on the label.

Where can I use a degreaser?

Degreasers may be appropriate for surfaces such as stovetops, oven hoods, counters, pots and pans, food-preparation areas, tools, and some garage or workshop surfaces. Before using one, check the product label to confirm the surface is compatible, especially for delicate materials such as natural stone, painted finishes, aluminum, wood, or certain plastics.

What is the best way to apply a degreaser?
  1. Remove loose debris or excess grease with a paper towel or scraper if appropriate.
  2. Apply the degreaser as directed—by spray, cloth, sponge, or diluted solution.
  3. Let it sit for the recommended dwell time so it can break down the grease, but do not let it dry unless the label says to do so.
  4. Scrub with a non-scratch pad or brush if needed.
  5. Rinse or wipe thoroughly according to the label, especially on food-contact surfaces.
  6. Dry the surface with a clean cloth.
Do I need to dilute a degreaser?

Some degreasers are ready to use, while concentrated products may need to be diluted with water. Using a product stronger than directed does not necessarily make it work better and may increase the risk of surface damage, residue, or irritation. Always use the dilution ratio specified on the label.

What should I avoid when using degreasers?
  • Do not mix degreasers with other cleaning products.
  • Do not use on surfaces not listed on the label.
  • Do not let the product dry on the surface unless instructed.
  • Do not use more product than needed.
  • Do not transfer the product into unlabeled decorative or food containers.
How should I store and dispose of degreasers?

Store degreasers in their original containers with labels intact, tightly closed, and out of reach of children and pets. Keep them away from heat, sparks, and incompatible products. For disposal, follow the label and local guidance—especially for concentrated, industrial, automotive, or solvent-based products.
